1. Don't Tailgate
Aside from the fact that tailgating is just poor road etiquette, it’s also a big risk to your windshield. The car in front of you can kick up any number of road debris that can end up causing damage to your windshield.
2. Only Use Plastic Tools to Scrape Ice Off of Your Windshield
Plastic ice scrapers are made specifically for the purpose of removing ice from your auto glass without causing damage. Metal and other hard materials aren’t made for that and can cause damage like deep etching in the glass.
3. Replace Windshield Wiper Blades Regularly
If you notice that your windshield wipers aren’t doing their job like they used to, it’s time to change them ASAP. Wiper blades have a rubber on them that wears down over time and can eventually expose the plastic underneath. If that plastic is constantly swiping across your windshield it can cause chips, cracks, or scratches. PLUS, if your windshield wipers aren’t doing the job, it’s probably pretty hard to see in dangerous conditions like snow and rain. Change those puppies!
4. Avoid Extreme Temperatures
Extreme temperatures can be a pain for all of us, and they're a pain for your windshield too! The glass expands when it's hot and contracts when it's cold, which can lead to stress and, you guessed it, chips or cracks. To give your windshield a break, try finding shaded parking spots to shade it from the scorching sun and a garage or other covered parking to protect it from the freezing cold.
5. Park in Shelter
Parking in covered or underground areas not only keeps your car safe from the elements, but also protects your glass from taking a hit from Mother Nature herself!
6. Avoid Driving Behind Construction Vehicles
We all know construction vehicles mean business, but they also mean potential trouble for your windshield. Give them a wide berth on the road to avoid any flying debris. And remember, those signs on the back telling you to stay back aren't just for decoration!
7. Don't Wait Until it Gets Worse
It's happened. There is a chip or crack in your windshield. That's a bummer, but don't ignore it and hope for the best. Aside from potentially being a safety concern, even tiny issues can snowball into major problems, especially when your windshield faces temperature changes and added stress from cruising down the road. Play it safe and get it checked out!
