Is the damage in your line of sight?
First things first—where is the damage located? If the crack or chip is right in the middle of your field of vision, it's usually a red flag. Windshield repairs are a great option for small, non-obtrusive chips or cracks that don’t affect your driving view. But if the damage is right where you look through, it might be time to consider windshield replacement. Why? A repair in the driver’s line of sight can distort your view, which isn’t safe.
Size matters.
Not all cracks or chips are created equal. Small chips (typically less than 3 inches) can often be repaired easily and quickly. However, cracks that extend over 3 inches are usually better off being replaced. Think of it this way—just like a small chip in your car’s tire can be fixed, but a large puncture requires a whole new tire, a bigger crack in your windshield is often beyond repair.
How deep is the damage?
Another thing to consider is how deep the damage goes. Is it just a superficial crack in the outer layer of glass, or has it penetrated all the way through? If the crack or chip reaches all the way through to the interior layer of your windshield, it’s a sign that the damage is serious. The layers of the glass serve an important safety function, and if they're compromised, your windshield might not be able to protect you as well in the event of an accident. In such cases, windshield replacement is often necessary.
Where did the damage occur?
The location of the damage is just as important as the size and depth. Cracks near the edge of the windshield can spread quickly and may lead to a full replacement. The edges are more prone to stress, and the crack could easily grow larger with changes in temperature or pressure. On the other hand, a small chip in the middle of the windshield may be a good candidate for a simple repair if caught early.
Is the crack spreading?
If the crack or chip is growing in size, it’s definitely time to think about windshield replacement. Chips can often be repaired, but if they turn into cracks that spread, it’s a different story. When this happens, the structural integrity of the windshield is compromised, and continuing to drive with it can lead to dangerous situations. Plus, waiting too long could make the repair more expensive or even impossible.
Auto glass repair v. auto glass replacement.
Now, you may be wondering, what’s the real difference between auto glass repair and auto glass replacement? Here’s the scoop: Auto glass repair is typically the best option for minor chips or cracks that are small, shallow, and not in the line of sight. It’s a fast, cost-effective solution to restore the integrity of your windshield without the hassle of a full replacement.
Auto glass replacement, however, is necessary when the damage is too extensive or in an unsafe location. While it’s a more involved process, the result is a completely new windshield that offers the strength, durability, and safety you need.
A few things to keep in mind.
A windshield repair is purely a structural fix, not a cosmetic one. Meaning the windshield will most likely not come out looking like it did B.T.C...a.k.a before the crack or chip. But it will be structurally safe.
When you do a repair, you do run the risk of the windshield cracking out completely and needing the full replacement. We always bring a piece of glass with us (specific to your make and model) so that in the event that does occur, we can replace the windshield on the spot.
If you are paying out of pocket, the price depends on a number of factors but, replacements start at $200.
If you are having the repair done through insurance and the glass cracks completely, we will contact the insurance company to change your claim from a repair to a replacement. With some insurance companies we are able to this on your behalf and with others you will need to be on the phone with us.
